Digital Urban Planning Lab
Amsterdam, NL
In the Digital Urban Planning lab, we explore new technologies and participation methods, involving the residents of Amsterdam in new ways within the city its development. We specifically focus on resident groups that are currently underrepresented or poorly heard. To achieve this, we develop new products and processes. In my role as a Digital Urban Planner, I combine my experience with community participation, digital product design, and my knowledge as an urbanist.
Scale: Ranging from street, neighborhood to city
Client: Internal clients, Municipality of Amsterdam
Role: User centered designer & Innovator
In collaboration with: Digital Urban Planning Lab
Challenge: “How can we involve residents in better, newer ways in urban development projects?”

Digital Twin
Netherlands 3D started as Amsterdam3D, an initiative by the Municipality of Amsterdam, which is now a collaboration between various government agencies. It is a digital 3D simulation of the environment that provides space for research and communication with residents and stakeholders. In close collaboration with the Netherlands 3D team, we conducted a pilot to integrate five 3D models from developers/architects in Amsterdam Zuidoost into the Digital Twin. This digital model, accessible from anywhere, provides valuable insight into how a future neighborhood or building will look. For our other projects, such as the Future Mirror and the AR tool, this also serves as the foundation.
Future mirror
The transformation a neighborhood undergoes is visualized and made insightful with dynamic images. The Future Mirror uses 3D visualizations to show the changes in the area over time, from the old to the new situation, and displays the different stages the development will go through. The screen is connected via a QR code to the project website, where residents of Amsterdam can read more about the developments and possibly sign up for updates. By consolidating this information and actively presenting it on-site, residents and neighbors become more aware of the developments in their area.
Woonmonitor
The Housing Monitor (Woonmonitor) is a web-based dashboard that provides insight and helps monitor which target groups are currently living in the existing housing stock and which groups will be served (or are being served) in ongoing housing projects and new plans.
As such, the Housing Monitor is a tool to support policy guidance and gain better control over who we are building for and where. The tool is currently available for internal policymakers and planners involved in the development of Amsterdam.
Amsterdam AR
By using Augmented Reality technology, this web application allows users to bring 3D models of future developments to life on their smartphone or tablet. They can load a model and project it onto their kitchen table at home or view how a building or square might look in the neighborhood. This interactive experience enhances community engagement and helps people better understand the impact of new developments in their area.
